Half-Explosion Box
Opens like a surprise— perfect for photos, messages, or even a mini paper cake!
Materials Needed
1 sheet of 8¼ × 8¼ in (21 × 21 cm) cardstock
Scoring board or ruler
Bone folder (optional)
Scissors or craft knife
Double-sided tape or glue
Optional: Embellishments, ribbon, mini paper cake
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Score Your Paper Into a 3×3 Grid
Score vertically at 2¾ in and 5½ in (7 cm and 14 cm).
Rotate 90° and score again at 2¾ in and 5½ in (7 cm and 14 cm).
Now you have a grid with 9 equal squares.
2. Cut Out Two Squares
From the top row, cut out the:
Top-left square
Top-center square
You’ll now have two flaps that open and one back corner that stays upright.
3. Fold the Flaps
Fold the side flaps downward so they fall open when the box is revealed.
The remaining upright corner becomes your decorative “wall” or display background.
4. Decorate the Inside
Add a photo, message, or artwork in the middle square.
Use the flaps for notes, stickers, or journaling.
The upright corner is perfect for adding dimension or a little surprise.
5. Lid
Cut a square that’s ⅛ in (0.3 cm) larger than your base:
→ For 8¼ in, cut an 8⅜ × 8⅜ in (21.3 × 21.3 cm) square
Score all sides at 1 in (2.5 cm)
Cut slits on opposite sides and glue into a lid shape

Final Tips
Secure the upright corner with double-sided tape if needed
Use foam squares or pop dots to add height to the center elements
A belly band or ribbon can help hold the flaps in place if you don’t use a lid
